Natural therapist insurance cover: what it is and why you should consider it?
Published 24 November 2021
Just like any other profession, natural therapists (including yoga instructors, naturopaths, reiki practitioners, and massage therapists) also need to think about sufficient insurance to protect their business from liabilities arising from the services you provide.
As such, natural therapist insurance helps protect your business against the unique liabilities that you face professionally.
Your insurance can safeguard you against situations that would impact your business financially, such as a client bringing a claim of injury against you, whether it’s your fault or not.
For example, if a client comes back after receiving treatment from you and claims that the therapy you prescribed made their injury worse. If they end up suing you, your natural therapist insurance policy could cover your legal expenses, providing you with a financial cushion that would make it easier for your business to bounce back quickly.
Below are the three types of insurance coverage every natural therapist should consider, regardless of the service they offer.
Professional indemnity insurance, also called malpractice insurance, is designed for professionals who provide a service or advice to their customers.
This coverage can be especially important for health and wellness professionals whose treatments and advice can significantly affect their patients’ quality of life. As a natural therapist, it’s your duty to put careful thought into the treatments and therapies you provide. Your methods should help improve your clients’ physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing and quality of life.
Even with your best efforts, there is still that small risk that a client might accuse you of making a mistake in their treatment. For example, they could claim that they reacted badly to the treatment you gave them and it led to more pain, and they might decide to sue you for financial compensation.
These kinds of allegations are financially damaging for your business. If your client decides to take their claim to court, it could cost you thousands in legal representation and settlement.
Your professional indemnity insurance will protect you financially in case of such a situation. It can cover the costs of your legal defence as well as the compensation the court may order you to pay the other party.
However, it doesn’t cover all types of therapeutic issues. Some of the common exclusions are intentional and reckless conduct, illegal acts and sexual misconduct.
Public and products liability
Public liability insurance, also called general liability insurance, protects your business against the claims of
• bodily injury to your clients or other people
• damage to your clients’ or other people’s property
• personal injury, such as defamation.
It’s essential for any business that deals with members of the public to take into consideration this type of insurance cover, since any contact with a third party can result in potential accidents, such as physical injuries or other unforeseen risks that can expose the business to financial loss.
Natural therapists should recognise that the plaintiff may not necessarily be your patient; it could be someone delivering goods to your premises. If they were to slip and fall while on your business premises, they could sue you for negligence and claim that you failed to keep your property safe. In such a case, your public liability insurance could cover your legal costs and compensation settlement.
Note that public liability insurance doesn’t cover injuries resulting from any bodywork you perform or advice you give. Those types of claims may be covered by your professional indemnity insurance, which is why you need these both types of coverage.
Products liability is often included in a public liability policy and covers claims against you in case your products cause
• injury or death
• nervous shock, such as emotional distress or a recognised psychiatric illness
• property damage.
Suppose you have your own line of essential oils, which you prescribe to your clients as part of their aromatherapy. If one of your clients develops a skin irritation in reaction to your essential oil and decides to file a suit alleging that there are harmful ingredients in your products. If this happens, your products liability insurance can cover your legal fees and settlement payments, reducing the financial burden of your lawsuit.
Tools and equipment insurance
This type of insurance covers the cost of replacing or repairing any business equipment that is damaged or stolen. It essentially provides protection for your physical assets, including massage tools, treatment couches and chairs, sterilisers and other equipment necessary for your professional activities.
Tools and equipment insurance often comes in two types of cover: unspecified or specified items. The first provides cover up to a certain sum, depending on your insurer, for general business property. The advantage of this cover is that you can use it to claim on most of your physical assets if they are damaged or stolen.
A specified cover policy insures specific pieces of equipment, which you determine when you first apply for the policy. This is a wiser option if you have an expensive business asset that you know will be hard to replace if it breaks down or malfunctions.
Looking for natural therapist insurance
You can shop for your insurance by the type of cover it provides. This allows you to cherry-pick the specific cover your business needs, so you won’t have to pay for policies you won’t benefit from. It also allows you to compare insurance policies from different providers and choose the most cost-effective for your needs.
Another option is to look for an insurer who offers a policy specially designed for natural therapists. These policies often already include different types of cover such as professional indemnity and public liability.
The advantage of this option is that these providers are already familiar with the risks your profession faces, so they can offer you advice and add-on covers that protect you from those risks particular to your practice.
